LAW3046   Critical Criminology   (20 credits)

Description

This module examines alternatives to conventional, administrative and mainstream criminology's definitions and explanations of crime and criminality. The module presents alternative ways of seeing (criminal) justice and the prospects for different and alternative responses to crime. The module will present students with a variety of new `lenses' through which problems of individual and social harm can be viewed. These will include work on globalisation and crime; the rise of new forms of crime and criminologies, such as environmental crime and green criminology; the perpetration of harms by the state and the concept of state crimes and criminality; broader theoretical approaches to explaining crime, such as international political economy analysis; and critical perspectives on criminology emerging from postcolonial and southern theories.
